WRC Promoter extends Sweden deal by further two years

Rally Sweden’s breathtaking snow and ice spectacle will remain in the FIA World Rally Championship until 2024 following a new two-year agreement with WRC Promoter.

The event will stay in the city of Umeå following the unqualified success of last weekend’s rally there. It was the WRC’s first visit to the forests of the Västerbotten region in the north-east of the country.

Rally Sweden was a founding member of the WRC’s inaugural season in 1973 and the move north to Umeå proved popular with teams, competitors and fans, who enjoyed four-days of edge-of-the-seat competition in perfect winter conditions.

“This agreement secures Sweden’s place in the FIA World Rally Championship for the next two years and protects the future of the WRC’s only pure winter rally,” said WRC Promoter event director Simon Larkin

“The move north to Umeå has proved a resounding success and we thank the people of the Västerbotten region for the support and warm welcome they extended to the championship last week.”

Rally Sweden CEO Glenn Olsson said the WRC’s first visit to Umeå had exceeded expectations.

“We had fantastic roads, good weather, excellent television images and a marvellous response from fans in the area who turned out in droves to watch the rally,” he said.

“It justified our decision to move to Umeå, which proved a perfect host for the rally, and it’s wonderful news that WRC Promoter and Rally Sweden can confirm the WRC will return for two more years.”
