Awesome Aasen
wins Trophy title

Marius Aasen won the Drive DMACK Fiesta Trophy after victory at the final round in Spain on Sunday.

The 23-year-old Norwegian put himself in pole position by claiming maximum points in the first leg of the double header RallyRACC Catalunya - Costa Daurada after Friday’s gravel section.

He completed the job on Saturday and Sunday’s asphalt speed tests in the Tarragona hills south of Barcelona, to claim his second event victory of the year in a Ford Fiesta R2 and secure the title.

“We’ve worked so hard this year to put ourselves in this position and it’s unbelievable that we have actually done it. I had a really safe rally and a very good feeling with the car all weekend. Now we’ve actually achieved it, I aim to make the best possible use of this fantastic prize,” said Aasen, who wins a seven-rally 2016 WRC 2 programme in a Fiesta R5.

Four drivers started the rally with a realistic chance of winning the title, but 2014 series runner-up Tom Cave was the only driver who began the final day able to stop Aasen.

However, the 23-year-old’s hopes ended when he went off the road and lost over eight minutes. It dropped him to third and he had to settle for second in the standings for a second season, 17 points behind Aasen.

Second in the rally was Australian Brendan Reeves, making a one-off appearance in the series. He finished 1min 39.3sec behind Aasen. Kevin van Deijne finished fourth with Max Vatanen and Edoardo Bresolin completing the top six.
