The story so far

Sheikh Khalid bin Faisal bin Sultan Al Qassimi is one of the biggest stars in Middle East rallying.

He burst onto the scene in 2002, winning both the FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC) Gp N and United Arab Emirates Championship titles in his debut season. He then went on to win the Middle East title outright in 2004.

The draw of World Rally Championship competition proved too much to resist in 2005 and 2006, as Sheikh Khalid offset his MERC commitments with a programme of events in the FIA Production Car World Rally Championship.

A string of consistent results in the PWRC helped the UAE driver to step up into the Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team in 2007 and he went on to tackle nearly 40 WRC rounds during the next five years with the squad, his best result coming at Rally Australia in 2011 where he finished fifth overall.

After a year out in 2012, Sheikh Khalid returned to the championship in 2013, now in partnership with Citroën. He tackled a seven-round WRC programme in a DS 3 World Rally Car and combined this with a full season in the Middle East Rally Championship, finishing as runner-up in an RRC-spec car.

Al Qassimi ran similar split programmes in 2014 and 2015, when he contested a handful of WRC rallies and finished as runner-up in the MERC on both occasions.

A four-round WRC campaign with Citroën followed in 2016 as the manufacturer took a season out of full-time competition to prepare for a comeback the following year.

Khalid returned to the Citroën Total Abu Dhabi team cockpit for a limited four-rally programme of events in 2017 and he’s expected to take part in a similar number of events in 2018.
