A ski instructor by trade, French champion Yoann Bonato’s rally career stretches back to 2001 when he began tackling club and national events in his native France.

He contested the Citroën Challenge and Suzuki Rally Cup, winning the latter on his second attempt in 2008. Having sampled the Junior WRC in 2007, he returned two years later and claimed a podium in Poland.

Bonato was back on familiar territory for the next few seasons, primarily honing his technique in the French asphalt series, winning the Opel Cup in 2013 in an Adam R2.

In 2015 he progressed to a 4WD Peugeot 208 T16 and began working with hugely experienced co-driver Denis Giraudet. They netted third in the French Championship, claiming victory at the Critérium des Cévennes, and four wins in the R5 class.

For the next three seasons Bonato mixed WRC 2 outings with the French Tarmac Championship. He scored WRC 2 podiums in Corsica in 2016 and 2018, but his biggest successes came in his home series.

He won the 2017 title in a Citroën DS 3 R5 with four victories and went one better in 2018, defending the title in a C3 R5 with five wins.
