Abbring started his motorsport career in junior rallycross and by the age of 16 he had won the Dutch and Belgian titles three times.

His first taste of rallying came aged 17, when he co-drove his father in the 2006 Dutch Rally Championship. The following season he got behind the wheel himself, winning the Mitsubishi Colt Cup in the Dutch Championship.

In 2008 Abbring stepped up to the international stage with the first of three seasons in the Junior WRC. In 2009 he won in Poland, becoming the first Dutchman to win a JWRC round and, aged 20, the youngest.

In 2011 he had the first of five WRC trials with the fledgling Volkswagen Motorsport team but missed out on a place with the German manufacturer.

Instead, after winning the Volant Peugeot Cup in France in 2013, Abbring found a home at Hyundai Motorsport and became the squad’s test driver in 2015 alongside a five-round WRC programme in an i20 World Rally Car.

A similar programme in 2016 blended with behind-the scenes work developing Hyundai’s
new i20 R5 and 2017-specification World Rally Cars. He was released at the end of the season and drove a Peugeot 208 T16 to third place in the Belgian championship.

For 2018 Abbring plans a WRC 2 campaign in a Ford Fiesta R5.
