Rallying is in the blood for Hiroki, whose father is double Production Car World Rally Champion Toshi Arai.

Hiroki made his rally debut at the age of 19, and was soon taking part in the All Japan Rally Championship and the FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship.
In 2014, he competed in the Japan Rally Championship and tackled two rounds of the Austria Rally Championship.

His talent was noticed by Toyota, who in 2015 selected him to be part of its Toyota Gazoo Racing Challenge Program for young drivers. Based in Europe, and training under the watchful eye of Tommi Makinen, Arai's development programme included a variety of rallies in Finland and Europe.

He made his WRC debut in the WRC 2 class of Neste Rally Finland in 2016 and returns for an expanded programme of WRC rallies in 2017.
