Wilson’s nomination was put forward by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem earlier this year and formally approved by FIA Member Clubs during Thursday's Extraordinary General Assembly in Macau. The appointment places the Briton in one of the most senior roles in global motorsport governance.
A rally man through and through, Wilson has been a leading figure in WRC service parks for more than 25 years. His company M-Sport has run Ford’s top-level rally programme since 1997, securing three manufacturers’ titles (2006, 2007, 2017) and back-to-back drivers’ and co-drivers’ crowns with Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia in 2017 and 2018.
Before his time in team management, Wilson was a front-running driver in his own right - notably winning the British Rally Championship in 1994.
"I am delighted to take on the role as FIA Deputy President for Sport," Wilson said. "As the Federation pushes forward with its mission to advance motorsport and develop grassroots initiatives, I look forward to playing a part in helping to shape the future of the sport we love and working with the President to continue growing and strengthening our championships."
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem added: “The role of Deputy President for Sport is absolutely integral to our organisation, and one that Malcolm Wilson brings a wealth of experience to. Having competed for over 40 years at the highest level, both as a driver and technical partner to teams, his expertise will be invaluable to the FIA and our Member Organisations. I am delighted to welcome Malcolm to the Federation and look forward to working with him to grow motorsport at every level.”
