The popular Greek veteran, co-driven in his Ford Fiesta Rally3 by Allan Harryman, was the only WRC3 driver to navigate this year’s edition of the Safari without incident, easing to a dominant win of more than 50 minutes over local hopeful Nikhil Sachania.
The victory springboarded Vasilakis from seventh to first in the Masters Cup standings, ten points clear of Johannes Keferböck and Michał Sołowow, who previously shared top spot. He also slots into third overall in the WRC3 standings, moving up five positions.
With victory all-but secured and with preservation in mind, Vasilakis was happy to leave his three rivals slogging it out for stage win bragging rights. It was Bolivian youngster Nataniel Bruun who benefited, winning all four of Sunday’s stages.
However, Bruun had previously retired and restarted his Fiesta twice over the course of the rally, leaving him languishing in fourth spot, over an hour off Vasilakis’ benchmark time.
Sachania claimed second place overall, 6min 44sec clear of the Fiesta of Indian driver Naveen Pulligilla.
