Success came late in life to Didier Auriol, who became the first Frenchman to win the WRC in 1994 at the age of 36. He drove for a wide range of manufacturers, but his greatest moments came with Lancia and Toyota – he scored 18 of his 20 WRC victories with the teams. He was a master of Corsica’s twisting, turning mountain roads and won the island event six times.
