McKenna eyes more WRC 3 outings

After impressing on his WRC 3 debut at Rally Guanajuato Mexico earlier this month, Barry McKenna is looking forward to tackling further FIA World Rally Championship rounds in the future.

Skoda Fabia R5 driver McKenna set top-three category times on the León-based event, but missed out on a finish after a mechanical problem halted his progress on Saturday’s second run through the Alfaro test.

Despite missing out on the result, the American-based Irishman enjoyed his first taste of the WRC and is keen to be back for more.

“It’s been fantastic,” said McKenna. “The stages in Mexico were fantastic and quite similar in parts to some of the ones we would be using in the American series.

“If Argentina had been happening next, we would probably have gone down there. I would like to do three more this year, it would be great to do Rally GB.

“I’ve never competed on Rally GB before, but I’ve done a few events in the same area and I’ve done a fair bit of testing in Sweet Lamb, so I would have an idea of what the stages are going to be like.”

McKenna’s early hopes in México were dashed by the El Chocolate stage, where he suffered a puncture on the first run and then fuel pump problems the second time through.

“It was a bit annoying to have those problems,” said McKenna, “but it was still amazing to be able to go to Mexico and get that experience. I’ve got the onboards now and I’ll be 100 per cent going back to that event next year.”
