WRC 2 in Turkey: Tidemand in control

Pontus Tidemand delivered a textbook drive in sizzling hot temperatures to build up a comfortable lead in WRC 2 on Saturday at Rally Turkey.

The Swede, driving a Skoda Fabia Rally2, started with a cautious approach, settling himself in behind early leader Adrien Fourmaux.

Tidemand’s game plan paid off when the Frenchman picked up a rear-left puncture just 2km into the Yeşilbelde 2 speed test and he cruised ahead, arriving back at the Asparan service park with a 2min32.sec overnight advantage.

“The last stage was very hard for everyone, so I'm glad we came through that without problems. I tried to enjoy this one but I think tomorrow will be very tough," said the leader.

Adrien Fourmaux set the early pace before a puncture cost him the lead

Fourmaux was second, but deserved better. Despite his inexperience on gravel, the M-Sport Ford man had shown terrific pace in his Fiesta, picking up a trio of stage wins over the course of the day.

"We had a puncture after 2km and had to change it on the stage. We lost two minutes. After the stage, we tried to cool the car down and we couldn't get it restarted. We lost a lot of time on the road section which cost us another minute with a penalty," he explained.

Eyvind Brynildesen was another man feeling deflated on Saturday. The Norwegian’s Skoda suffered a puncture on the day’s opener which he and co-driver Ilka Minor stopped to change. However, their luck went from bad to worse when a wheel came off later in the stage, leaving the pair stranded.
