Wilson returns to WRC in Britain

Matthew Wilson will mark the 10th anniversary of his WRC debut by returning to the championship for the first time in almost two years at Wales Rally GB (13 - 16 November).

The former series regular will drive an M-Sport-prepared Ford Fiesta RRC in the WRC 2 category, partnered by long-time co-driver Scott Martin. The car will be entered by Polish squad C-Rally.

The 27-year-old Briton drove Ford Focus and Fiesta RS cars from 2006 to 2011, finishing fourth in Japan in 2007 and Australia in 2011. His last event was Rally Sweden in 2013 when he replaced the unavailable Nasser Al-Attiyah in the Qatar M-Sport World Rally Team.

“It’s the 10th anniversary of the first WRC rally that Scott and I competed in and we thought it would be great to have a bit of fun at the end of the year,” said Wilson, who finished 13th at the 2004 GB event.

“I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve been out of a rally car for a long time so I have a couple of days of testing planned. I’m obviously going to take the rally seriously, but we both want to enjoy it as well.”

Ott Tänak has entered a DMACK Tyres-supported Fiesta RS in the Welsh event. The Estonian has competed in WRC 2 this season but has also started two events in World Rally Cars. He showed stunning first day pace in Sweden before finally finishing fifth.

The rally has 72 entries in the international section and 88 crews registered for a supporting national event, including former England cricketer and BT Sport TV presenter Graeme Swann in a Fiesta R2 and five-time British champion Jimmy McRae in a historic class Vauxhall Firenza.
