Home fixtures for WRC trio
A busy weekend for some of the WRC regulars
The Group B Lancia Delta S4 that Toivonen piloted to victory at Britain’s RAC Rally in 1985 will be displayed by brother Harri at the city centre test on both the Thursday and Friday evenings ahead of the competitive action.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of Henri Toivonen’s birth and it was exactly 30 years ago yesterday (Monday) that he died, along with co-driver Sergio Cresto, in an accident at the Tour de Corse which brought about the end of the Group B era.
“With this project we want to honour Henri’s career as one of the brightest stars in the world of rallying and remind people of the fact that he was Jyväskylä’s own son. That’s the reason why the Harju City special stage in Jyväskylä is the best possible place for celebrating his memory,” said rally promoter Jani Backman.
Rally Finland was an important event for Toivonen. The 1975 fixture marked his debut in the sport and he tackled it 10 times, finishing third in a Lancia 037 in 1984.
After winning the RAC Rally, Toivonen drove the same Delta S4 to victory at Rallye Monte-Carlo in January 1986, his third and final WRC success.
