Prokop joins the WRC Dakar list

Martin Prokop has become the latest star of the WRC to sign-up for the 2016 Dakar rally.

The Czech Republic driver will pilot a Toyota Hilux V8 with Belgium's Overdrive Racing, which also runs a car for WRC 2 ace Yazeed Al Rajhi, Prokop's manager Quirin Müller confirmed today.

Other big names from the WRC taking part include Mikko Hirvonen and former world champions Sébastien Loeb and Carlos Sainz.

Prokop, 33, tested the Toyota last month and impressed Overdrive director Jean-Marc Fortin who offered him the drive. The deal was signed yesterday (13 October).

Dakar will be Prokop's first taste of cross country rallying and his testing will start after RallyRACC Catalunya-Costa Daurada (22 - 25 October) when he will drive a T2 spec car on the sand dunes of Dubai.

The Dakar will take place from 2 - 16 January on roads in Argentina and Bolivia. The opening section around Buenos Aires and Villa Carlos Paz should be familiar to Prokop who has twice finished fourth at Rally Argentina.

Prokop will miss the opening round of the 2016 WRC season. Details of his WRC programme after that are yet to be finalised.
