Prokop hopes to replicate Mexico form

Martin Prokop hopes the form that took him to sixth place at Rally Guanajuato Mexico will carry him to similarly impressive results on the upcoming run of gravel events.

Sixth was the Czech driver’s best result since Rally Italia Sardegna last June and the best finish on the event by a privateer. “I had gone really carefully in Mexico in previous seasons, but this time I drove well,” Prokop told wrc.com.

“It was the smallest time gap to Ogier and the best guys at the front, so I wasn’t driving too carefully but I stayed on the road and the car was in one piece all the time. There must be a secret! I hope we can do it again on the next difficult events in Argentina, Portugal, and Sardinia. I like Argentina a lot. I did my best result there when I was fourth in 2012.”

Prokop’s more determined approach in Mexico meant his his Ford Fiesta RS car took a battering early on, but after settling into a comfortable position in the standings he was able to ease back from the limit. “The first half of the rally was really good for our speed. The car had a lot of damage so there was a lot of work for the mechanics but the result was incredible, one of the best results for me on gravel. In the second half we were cruising because there was no reason to fight or take risks,” he said.

But even with a more careful approach the Mexican stages almost got the better of him on the final leg. "Two stages before the finish we had a big moment because there were stones in the road and we punctured on one of them. Immediately we had a flat tyre and went off so it was a big, big moment. We stopped among some rocks and finally managed to get back on the road and repair the car. So it was an up and down rally but overall I’m really happy.”
