The president was given a tour of the rally base in Matosinhos by Automobile Club of Portugal president Carlos Barbosa.
He visited the Exponor service park and team bases and met drivers including world champion Sébastien Ogier and rally leader Kris Meeke (above).
"It has been a magnificent start and a really very good competition today but of course the vital day is tomorrow," said de Sousa, who admitted to being a long time rally fan.
"When I was young I adored it so I went all over Europe and Portugal to see every rally, now it's a little bit more difficult as you can imagine!"
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the rally which moved back to its original home in the north of the country in 2015.
"This rally means a lot for the north and for the whole of the country. It is a unique moment for thousands and thousands of people coming from everywhere all over Europe and so we are very lucky and very happy to have it.”
