Mikkelsen takes on ski champ Svindal

Downhill ski champion Aksel Lund Svindal sampled life from the co-driver’s seat of Andreas Mikkelsen’s Volkswagen Polo R over one of the world’s most dramatic stretches of road in their home country of Norway.

The pair initially raced each other among the stunning fjord scenery of the Lyseveien road, which features 27 hairpin bends in 29km (below).

Svindal bolted on his skis for flat-out off-piste downhill, while Mikkelsen threaded his car between massive snowbanks which towered up to eight metres high. When the snow became sparse, Svindal was strapped into the Polo R for the final few kilometres.

“A priceless experience! I really hope I get the chance to do that again some time,” said 32-year-old Svindal. “I have to confess to being a little bit jealous of Andreas for driving in rallies.”
