Mikkelsen extends Volkswagen deal

Andreas Mikkelsen has extended his contract with Volkswagen Motorsport for ‘several years’ beyond this season.

The Norwegian, who celebrates his 26th birthday today, lies third in the WRC drivers’ standings having scored four podiums from six rounds in 2015.

“It is a great feeling to know that the team is happy with me and my performance, and that they want to continue working with me. I am thankful for this opportunity to continue to develop in this great team. It confirms that we are on the right track and gives us an extra boost for the future,” he said.

Mikkelsen and co-driver Ola Fløene, who also signed an extension, have been part of Volkswagen’s family since 2011. They won the Intercontinental Rally Challenge in 2011 and 2012 for Skoda and finished third in the WRC last year.

Volkswagen Motorsport director Jost Capito praised Mikkelsen’s performances since he stepped up to a Polo R WRC early in 2014.

“We have enjoyed a lot of success together in the last two years, and this season, and are confident that it is only a matter of time until Andreas and Ola claim their first win. We are impressed by Andreas’ talent and the analytical and tactical way he goes about things,” he said.

Volkswagen announced contract extensions for Sébastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala last October. Although it would not go into details, both are believed to have committed to the German squad until the end of 2016.
