Paddon closes on WRC future
Kiwi hopes to sign 2016 contract shortly
The delayed New Generation i20 WRC is displayed on the Korean manufacturer’s stand in a motorsport-based livery, although it is not the colour scheme the car will bring to the stages at its debut at Rallye Monte-Carlo in January.
The car was expected to be based on the three-door i20 model and break cover this season. However, Hyundai Motorsport announced in April that it would be delayed until 2016 due to a hold-up in the production of the road vehicle.
As a result the German-based squad switched its focus to the five-door version, which Thierry Neuville, Dani Sordo, Hayden Paddon and Kevin Abbring have been testing.
The preview version shown in Frankfurt displays a large N logo on its grille, linking the car to Hyundai’s new performance brand. The current WRC car carries an i20 logo on its front.
