Gamers set to tackle WRC 5 stage in México

It won’t just be the WRC crews that will be trying to avoid any mishaps on the Rally Guanajuato México stages this weekend. An elite group of WRC 5 gamers will also be contesting the event – albeit virtually – and bidding to secure a place in the semi finals of the eSports WRC Championship.

This weekend’s competition marks the third qualifying round of the 2016 virtual WRC series and a field of gamers will do battle against the clock on an 8.38km version of Rally Guanajuato México’s ‘Ibarrilla’ stage.

Competitors are split across three gaming platforms: Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC. The most successful nine gamers in México will join 18 other gamers that won through from the opening qualifying heats at Rallye Monte-Carlo and Rally Sweden.

The qualifying round winners secure a coveted place in the semi finals of the competition that will be run alongside Rally Italia Sardegna (9-12 June). The second semi-final will he held at Rally RACC Catalunya (13-16 October). The final will be contested at Wales Rally GB in November.

This weekend’s Rally Guanajuato México qualifying round is the first gravel event of the 2016 eSports WRC Championship.

The virtual action will be broadcast live on Twitch this Sunday from 1600hrs (GMT+1).
