Gamers fight for eSports title in Wales

Eighteen of the world’s best video gamers will battle for the inaugural eSports WRC Championship title during this weekend’s Dayinsure Wales Rally GB.

While the forests echo to the sound of highly-tuned World Rally Cars as drivers fight for every tenth of a second, the competition in the Deeside service park on Saturday will be equally as fierce as gamers challenge for the eSports crown and a €20,000 Hyundai i20 road car.

Players have participated in qualifying heats on WRC 5, the official game of the FIA World Rally Championship, at each of the 12 WRC rounds this season. Eighteen players from 10 countries, including Germany, Britain, France, Australia and Canada, have reached the final.

A purpose-built arena has been constructed in the service park and the finalists will compete on the six special stages of WRC 5’s Wales Rally GB event. The three best players will contest the final at 18.30 (local time) on a selection of three stages.

The entire competition will be broadcast on the official Twitch ESL WRC channel here.

The prizegiving will take place in Llandudno on Sunday afternoon, a few minutes before the finish ceremony of the rally itself.
