Flooded Corsica: picture special

Torrential rainstorms created severe disruption on the normally serene Mediterranean island of Corsica overnight – not least for organisers of the Tour de Corse – Rallye de France.

Weather experts predicted up to 300 litres of rain per square metre as a medicane, a rare weather phenomenon similar to a tropical storm, hit Corsica and the neighbouring island of Sardinia.

It has now been raining heavily for more than 24 hours in the rally base of Corte and the surrounding mountains, with more to come today before the sunshine is due to return tomorrow.

The weather forced organisers to cancel SS2 – take a look at the images below and see for yourself what the rally is trying to cope with.
