Cars will be the stars at McRae Rally Challenge

A special event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Colin McRae’s FIA World Rally Championship title success will feature a large collection of the cars that helped to shape his successful rallying career.

The ‘McRae Rally Challenge’ will be held at Knockhill Racing Circuit in Scotland on 16/17 May and the focal point of the event will be a display that’s been dubbed: ‘Colin’s Cars’ by organisers.

The display will feature the original Vauxhall Nova that the Scot used to make his WRC debut at the 1987 Swedish Rally. It was his first-ever event in Sweden but his flat-out, fearless driving style catapulted him to an impressive 36th place overall.

Also on display will be a number of the cars that McRae expertly drove during his 14-year world rally championship career.

The line up includes the Ford Focus WRC that McRae famously crashed in 2001 as he battled with compatriot Richard Burns for the world drivers’ title at the season-ending Network Q RAC Rally.

The car has since been fully restored by a Scottish businessman and will take pride of place alongside McRae’s Ford Focus WRC from the 2001 Rally Australia and his Network Q RAC Rally-winning Subaru Impreza from 1997.

The Subaru Legacy and Ford Sierra Cosworth rally cars that McRae used during the early part of his career will also be on display, as will his red Ford Escort Mk2 (main picture) and the innovative McRae R4 (inset picture) normally-aspirated rally car that Colin was developing at the time of his death in 2007.
