Beer flows in pub that ran dry
Fans eager to quench their thirst at Coates Hire Rally Australia (10 - 13 September) will be well-catered for at The Pub With No Beer when the event pauses at the most famous bar Down Under on Friday morning.
The pub in the tiny hamlet of Taylors Arm was immortalised in a popular folk ballad by late country singing legend Slim Dusty after the taps ran dry and competitors will stop for a short regroup after the opening two speed tests.
The song was the biggest selling Australian recording in its day and earned the singer the first gold record ever awarded in the country.
It tells the story of country singer Gordon Parsons who took a break from work one hot day in the 1940s to visit the pub. When he ordered a beer the barman told him they had run out as locals had already drunk the entire monthly war time quota.
He penned the song for Slim Dusty and it went on to be ranked fifth in a list of best Aussie songs of all time by the Australian Performing Rights Association, just behind Midnight Oil’s ‘Beds are Burning’ and Men at Work’s ‘Down Under’
There’s no chance of a repeat on Friday - an on-site brewery ensures the beer will continue to flow!
