Australia excels in FIA environmental programme

Kennards Hire Rally Australia has joined Rally Sweden in achieving the highest environmental standards in the FIA Institute’s Sustainability Programme.
The Coffs Harbour-based event has received the top Achievement of Excellence award for a second time after showing strong environmental credentials. Organisers were hailed for their post-event report and carbon footprint calculations, which the FIA said reflected their sustainability knowledge.
Vodafone Rally de Portugal was also rewarded for its efforts by attaining second-level Progress Towards Excellence status.
It was praised for sustainability initiatives in the Matosinhos service park, refuelling zones and special stages. It was also complimented for its collaboration with environmental authorities, its conservation policy and communications.
Rally Sweden retained top level status in May after inspectors highlighted its collaboration with the country’s biggest waste contractor to monitor and improve waste management and its commitment to sustainability at all levels of the organising team.
Institute deputy president and FIA environmental delegate Garry Connelly applauded the events.
“That all of these awards have been achieved at a similar time reflects the drive and positive approach many motor sport stakeholders now have towards the environment. We hope this will encourage others to follow their example and join the FIA Action for Environment,” he said.
All 14 rounds of the FIA World Rally Championship must achieve accreditation by the end of this year. Commitment to Excellence rewards basic practice, Progress towards Excellence supports good practice and best practice earns Achievement of Excellence.
