Champion Al-Attiyah wins WRC 2 in Portugal
Qatari moves second in points standings
Al-Attiyah climbed to second in the WRC’s major support category after adding victory at Vodafone Rally de Portugal last weekend to his win at Rally Guanajuato Mexico in March.
The Qatari lifted the title last year in a Fiesta RRC, which is well-suited to rough-road gravel rallies. But he believes the R5 version could be a better option for the lightning fast roads in Poland.
“I know the R5 is faster, but we have an RRC car and I love it because you can go flat out everywhere,” Al-Attiyah told wrc.com. “But we are thinking now to use an R5 for Poland because it will be a faster car there.”
He said any swap would be for Poland only, and he would return to the RRC specification car for his remaining WRC 2 rounds.
Victory in Portugal extended Al-Attiyah’s remarkable 100 per cent record in 2015. He has won eight times from eight starts in events spanning WRC 2, the FIA Middle East Rally Championship, the Dakar Rally and cross country events.
“This is a great start to 2015 and it’s a really nice feeling. My plan is to win all three titles, in WRC 2, Middle East and cross country, this season,” he added.
