Veiby repels Tempestini in Junior WRC fight

Ole Christian Veiby remains the man to beat in the FIA Junior WRC category at Neste Rally Finland after holding off series leader Simone Tempestini on Saturday.

The Norwegian has led since Thursday night’s opening speed test and ended the penultimate day with an 18.3sec advantage in Citroën’s DS 3 R3.

Veiby extended his lead to almost 30sec by the middle of today’s leg in the forests south-west of the rally base of Jyväskylä. However, Italian Tempestini narrowed the margin this afternoon ahead of tomorrow’s final leg of four short speed tests.

Rising young Finnish star Juuso Nordgren won three stages to retain third, 1min 36.7sec from the lead. Andrea Crugnola was fourth with Vincent Dubert and Romain Martel rounding off the top six.

Incidents have been few. Martin Koci was the only retirement after breaking his car’s radiator following a heavy landing while Terry Folb failed to restart after his engine was found to be damaged after a similar problem to Koci yesterday.
