Veiby ends Tempestini’s Junior WRC dominance

Ole Christian Veiby brought Simone Tempestini’s winning run in the FIA Junior WRC to a halt with victory at Neste Rally Finland on Sunday.

Tempestini won the opening two rounds in Portugal and Poland, but Veiby led the four-day Finnish encounter from start to finish in his Citroën DS 3 R3 to close the gap at the top of the standings

Tempestini mounted a determined attack on Veiby in Sunday’s final leg. He won the final three forest road speed tests south of the rally base of Jyväskylä to trim Veiby’s winning margin to 5.6sec after 24 stages covering 333.60km.

Finn Juuso Nordgren, driving his first Junior WRC event, finished third. Nordgren won today’s opening stage and was fastest junior through yesterday’s demanding leg, which featured the daunting Ouninpohja test. He was 1min 38.9sec behind Veiby.

Almost five minutes further back in fourth was Vincent Dubert, with Romain Martel and Mohamed Al Mutawaa completing the top six. Martin Koci was the only other finisher in seventh. Andrea Crugnola was the only retirement today, the Italian exiting with a water leak.
