Lefebvre lands debut JWRC win in Portugal
Stéphane Lefebvre wins opening JWRC round at Rally de Portugal
He holds a seven-point lead over Christian Riedemann, having beaten the German by just over a minute in the opening encounter, and has experience on his side having competed in Poland last season.
Also benefiting from previous knowledge is Aron Domzala. The 24-year-old is the only Pole in the championship and has twice started the event. He has also competed in the Lithuanian Championship, which will help when the rally crosses the border for four stages there on the second day.
Hungary’s Komel Lukacs and Australian Molly Taylor are the other JWRC entrants with previous experience. Taylor took a podium finish in the Polish Citroen Racing Trophy last year.
Also expected to be competitive are Martin Koci, who was third in Portugal, Alastair Fisher and Simone Campedelli. Fisher led much of the opening round before crashing while Campedelli won five stages but lost a possible podium with brake problems.
The JWRC contenders will all be driving Citroen DS3 R3 cars on the four-day event, which covers 362.48km over 24 stages.
