Jan Solans completed a memorable day for Spain at Rally Italia Sardegna on Sunday afternoon when he won the FIA Junior WRC category to take the championship lead.
Solans added to Dani Sordo’s outright rally victory by taking his first junior win of the season in a Ford Fiesta R2 after a thrilling battle with Dennis Rådström that went down to the wire.
The pair were a cut above the rest of the field, with Solans taking 12 speed test victories and Rådström five.
Solans trailed his Swedish rival by only 4.4sec after a super Saturday drive that enabled him to regain lost ground. He continued in the same rich vein of form today, adding three more stage wins to start the final test with a 3.3sec advantage.
He crushed Rådström by 11.5sec to win by 14.9sec and open a nine-point lead at the top of the points standings.
“What an amazing weekend,” he said. “We have been on the limit on every stage since Friday after we had our problems. We decided to push on every stage and in the end, we achieved victory. We’re really happy and very proud.”
Tom Kristensson completed the podium more than three minutes behind, despite damage to his car’s engine sump. Raul Badiu, Martins Sesks and Julius Tannert filled the top six.
There were two retirements today as the rough gravel roads took their toll. Sean Johnston and Tom Williams both stopped with damaged sumps.
