Tom Kristensson regained the lead of the FIA Junior WRC Championship after a commanding victory at Neste Rally Finland on Sunday afternoon.
The Swede became the first double winner of the season and relegated Spain’s Jan Solans, who finished 1min 28.0sec behind. His margin is slender, however, as just a single point separates the pair ahead of the final round in Britain in October.
Kristensson led for almost the entire event in his Ford Fiesta R2 and his error-free weekend paid dividends. Accidents accounted for many of his rivals as the fast Finnish forest roads took a heavy toll on the youngsters.
Dennis Rådström was on course to finish second but the Swede crashed in the penultimate speed test and retired with a broken radiator. He is now 34 points off the championship lead.
Solans delivered a great comeback drive after an impact on Saturday morning damaged his Fiesta’s power steering and he plunged from third to fifth
Roland Poom filled the final podium place, more than 10 minutes adrift, despite a Saturday evening accident when his car flew into a tree. Finnish rookie Aleksi Royhkio, Sean Johnston and Enrico Oldrati completed the top six.
