Gilbert targets Junior treble

Quentin Gilbert will target his third consecutive FIA Junior WRC victory at 72nd LOTOS Rally Poland (2 - 5 July).

He made the perfect start to the series by winning the opening two rounds in Monte-Carlo and Portugal and a hat-trick would put him in a commanding position in the seven-round series.

Gilbert holds a 25 point lead over Ole-Christian Veiby and with the Norwegian opting to miss Poland (drivers can only score at six of the seven rallies), the Frenchman is certain to retain the lead whatever the outcome.

Veiby’s absence offers several drivers the opportunity to climb the standings. Best-placed is Italian Simone Tempestini, who lies five points behind Veiby after finishing fourth in Monte-Carlo and sixth in Portugal.

Close behind are Pierre-Louis Loubet and Henri Haapamaki, who finished second and third at their only outing in Portugal, while Jean-René Perry was only one place further back on the Portuguese gravel roads.

Nine cars are entered but for Welshman Osian Pryce it could be his last round as he is struggling to find the budget to continue.

All drivers will be at the wheel of identical DS 3 R3-MAX cars from Citroën and all can also score points in the WRC 3 category.

There are four drivers entered in WRC 3 who are not eligible for Junior WRC points. They are headed by ACI Team Italia trio Andrea Crugnola, Fabio Andolfi and newcomer Damiano De Tommaso, who replaces Giuseppe Testa in the young driver training programme.
