Gilbert dominates Junior WRC in Monte-Carlo

Quentin Gilbert opened the FIA Junior WRC season with a commanding victory at Rallye Monte-Carlo on Sunday.

The Frenchman lived up to his billing as favourite by winning the category in the four-day event by 2min 23.7sec from Germany’s Christian Riedemann.

Gilbert restarted this morning with a 3min 45sec lead and cruised through the final three stages for a convincing victory.

“It was a perfect weekend and maximum points in the opening round is a great start to the championship. We had no problems with the car, but we had to concentrate hard and be careful in the difficult conditions,” said Gilbert.

Riedemann, third overnight, quickly overhauled Norwegian debutant Ole Christian Veiby, whose tyre choice proved less than perfect. Veiby finished 1min 07.7sec behind in third.

Simone Tempestini was fourth, with Yohan Rossel and Alessandro Re completing the top six.

All drivers are at the wheel of Citroen’s DS 3 R3 MAX.
