The move, confirmed by the FIA World Motor Sport Council today, gives manufacturers extra scope to develop their cars while keeping costs in check during Rally1's fifth and final season. Homologation jokers allow teams to make specific technical updates to their cars outside the normal development restrictions.
From 2027, the WRC's top-flight machinery will run to all-new technical regulations designed to accommodate various powertrain technologies. The initial focus will be on competitors utilising sustainably-fuelled internal combustion engines, with the framework allowing for potential diversification into hybrid or fully electric technologies at a later stage, depending on future developments.
Teams will have two bonus homologation jokers on top of their standard allocation for chassis development in 2026 – a welcome boost as they look to squeeze every last drop of performance from their Rally1 machines.
The decision has already shown results with Hyundai Motorsport confirming its 2026 programme, with team boss Cyril Abiteboul citing the regulatory support as key to their commitment.
"We are pleased to confirm that Hyundai Motorsport will continue its participation in the FIA World Rally Championship in 2026," said Abiteboul. "This decision reflects the strong momentum we've built in recent events and the regulatory support from the FIA, which will allow us to further develop our Rally1 car and remain competitive at the highest level.
"This additional season also gives us the time to shape the future of Hyundai Motorsport with greater confidence."
