Faultless Fontana untouchable in WRC3 in Paraguay
Matteo Fontana will go down in the history books as the first-ever WRC3 victor at ueno Rally del Paraguay.
The Italian youngster successfully navigated his Ford Fiesta Rally3 to a second WRC3 win this season, moving him into second behind Taylor Gill in the championship standings.
With an all-but unassailable lead already going into Sunday morning, Fontana avoided unnecessary risk, eventually taking the class by 1min 50.9sec over Frenchman Ghjuvanni Rossi.
"It was a really beautiful rally in really demanding with the conditions," said Fontana. "I can't wait to come here again next year. We were leading since the first day, and today it was only about managing, so we didn't push at all."
Unlikely to catch the runaway Fontana, Rossi spent Sunday consolidating second place, eventually holding off the identical Fiesta of Eduardo Castro by over three minutes. Third place in Paraguay marked Castro’s first podium since last year’s Rally Chile Bio Bío.
Veteran Greek Georgios Vasilakis avoided any drama on the WRC’s maiden Paraguayan adventure to comfortably finish in fourth, ahead of the South American duo of Nataniel Bruun and André Martínez, both of whom restarted on Saturday following Friday issues.
