Moncet: We can help Breen find his form again

Hyundai Motorsport deputy team principal Julien Moncet is confident a return to the blue and orange i20 will help Craig Breen find his form again.

The Irishman has switched from M-Sport Ford and returns to Hyundai for a part-programme of FIA World Rally Championship rounds in 2023. While Breen started his campaign aboard a Puma with a podium at this year’s Rallye Monte-Carlo, he struggled as the season progressed.

Moncet wants to see Breen return to the sort of form which took him to three successive podiums in Estonia, Belgium and Finland aboard an i20 last year.

“Craig has had a difficult year,” said Moncet, “but he’s a good team player and I’m sure we’ll be able to put him back in the right way.”

Along with his new team-mate Esapekka Lappi, Breen has visited the Alzenau headquarters of Hyundai Motorsport.

“They both came to meet with the team and with the engineers,” said Moncet, “and they had the chance to look at the car and see how it works.”

Moncet added that bringing drivers in from both Hyundai’s rivals could offer an advantage to the Korean firm next season.

He added: “They can make some comparison for the gear ratio, things like that – and for the hybrid strategy, this can be interesting and it can help us understand if we are working in a similar way. But, of course, they don’t know everything about the cars they were driving this year. It will be very interesting to hear what they say on the car.”
