WRC’s 50 Greatest Moments: Co-driver Patterson takes the wheel

Not many professional co-drivers can say they’ve driven a World Rally Car on a WRC stage. But Chris Patterson can.

In an unprecedented turn of events, the Northern Irishman found himself behind the wheel of Petter Solberg’s Citroën DS3 for the Gustavsfors power stage at Rally Sweden in 2011.

Patterson was forced to drive the car after the Norwegian was caught speeding earlier in the weekend. Solberg received a ban, which kicked in just before the final test. 

There was a lot at stake. Before the final stage, the pair were just 7.7sec ahead of Sébastien Ogier in fourth, with Sébastien Loeb another 1min 42.3sec back in his similar car. 

Whilst Patterson couldn’t keep Ogier at bay, he managed to stay in front of Loeb and secured a well-deserved fifth. His heroics also made him an overnight celebrity in the Karlstad region...
