Adamo: Sordo’s charge to catch Ogier was ‘amazing’

Hyundai Motorsport team principal Andrea Adamo lauded Dani Sordo’s ‘amazing’ final day drive at last weekend’s RallyRACC - Rally de España to snatch a podium place from Sébastien Ogier

Adamo admitted Sordo’s performance in the finale of the Salou-based asphalt event was as good as anything he’d seen from the three-time world rally winner in recent years.

Despite starting the closing leg 1.2sec behind his former Citroën team-mate, Sordo landed a clean sweep of four stage wins in his i20 World Rally Car. The perfect Sunday gave him third place by 6.8sec, with title-chasing Ogier one place behind.

Sordo’s result, his second top-three of the season, meant it was a double podium for the Alzenau-based squad, with team-mate Thierry Neuville taking his second win of the year.

“We have to thank Dani,” said Adamo. “When I saw it was damp in the last stage, I was worried, but he did something amazing.

“He has done something on the final day that I have not seen in many years – he’s better when he’s catching the guy in front. It was amazing and I think this result has raised the spirit for him and Cándido [co-driver Carrera].”

Sordo was overjoyed with a first WRC podium alongside Carrera in only their second championship rally together.

“You can’t imagine how happy I am,” he grinned at the finish. “For me and for Cándido, it has been very hard to get us to this level. What a fantastic fight with Sébastien. It’s been a pleasure to drive here.”
