25 Stories – a celebration of the World Rally Car era

It was January 1997 when a new dawn broke over the FIA World Rally Championship as the exciting new World Rally Car era was ushered in at Rallye Monte-Carlo.

A quarter of a century on and the sun will set on that World Rally Car generation at 2021’s Rally Japan finale in November.

A new age of sustainable hybrid machinery will break cover on those same mountain roads in the French Alps in January next year.

The sense of anticipation is high – but before we arrive there, wrc.com will celebrate the delights and disappointments of the World Rally Car period, the controversies and the hullabaloos, the epic drives and the intense battles in a series of insightful written and video features throughout the rest of 2021.

25 Stories – a celebration of the World Rally Car era will also focus on the magic of the world’s best rally engineers, spotlight the gladiators behind the wheel, recall some of the jaw-dropping moments and, of course, highlight the great cars.

We’ll bring you a new feature every Friday – except in rally weeks when we’re busy bringing you the latest twist and turns from the special stages and you’re too busy enjoying the action to worry about anything else.

We kick-off on Friday 26 March with The Tides of Change. We examine what led up to this new chapter in the WRC’s history, what actually changed and what were the feelings back then about the new era.
