Lancia changed the face of rallying in 1974 with the debut of the Stratos HF - a purpose-built machine that marked a clear departure from modified road cars. Designed by Marcello Gandini and powered by a Ferrari Dino V6 engine, the wedge-shaped Stratos was the first rally car created specifically for competition.
Despite a calendar reduced to just eight rounds due to the global oil crisis - leading to the cancellation of Monte Carlo and Sweden - Lancia clinched its maiden manufacturers' title. Victories in Sanremo and the Great Britain underlined the Stratos’ potential, with Sandro Munari and Björn Waldegård delivering standout performances. The car’s arrival ushered in a new era of technical innovation and set the blueprint for future rally machinery.
