Car Info
The Volkswagen Polo R WRC set a new standard in modern rallying with an unprecedented run of four consecutive manufacturers’ championships from 2013 through 2016, establishing Volkswagen as a dominant force in the sport’s contemporary era. Built to the second generation of World Rally Car regulations introduced in 2011, the Polo R WRC was based on the production Polo’s heavily reinforced body shell, powered by a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine.
Its purpose-developed turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine delivered approximately 300 bhp, limited by the mandatory 33mm air restrictor. The car incorporated highly sophisticated four-wheel-drive systems, sequential transmissions, advanced electronics, and optimised aerodynamics, creating a highly adaptable platform that excelled across diverse rally surfaces and conditions. Volkswagen’s meticulous engineering and substantial resources yielded a remarkably refined and reliable rally car.
Sébastien Ogier spearheaded the Polo’s success, securing four consecutive drivers’ championships between 2013 and 2016, mirroring the manufacturers’ titles. Alongside teammates Jari-Matti Latvala and Andreas Mikkelsen, the Polo R WRC achieved record-breaking feats, including twelve consecutive rally wins in 2014 - surpassing the previous record set by Citroën’s DS3 WRC.
Volkswagen’s four-year dominance epitomised the impact of comprehensive manufacturer backing and methodical German engineering in rally sport. However, the marque’s unexpected withdrawal from the WRC at the end of 2016 shifted the competitive landscape.
