Car Info

The Subaru Impreza WRX defined the mid-1990s WRC era with three consecutive manufacturers’ championships from 1995 to 1997, becoming one of rallying’s most iconic and enduring names. Combining turbocharged boxer engine technology, symmetrical all-wheel drive, and Group A durability, the Impreza proved both innovative and incredibly effective.
At its heart was Subaru’s 2.0-litre turbocharged flat-four engine, producing approximately 300 bhp. Its low centre of gravity and balanced weight distribution, courtesy of the boxer layout, contributed to superb handling. The symmetrical all-wheel-drive system gave the car remarkable traction and predictability, particularly on loose and mixed surfaces - ideal for the global demands of the WRC.
Subaru’s breakthrough came in 1995 when Colin McRae claimed the drivers’ title, becoming Britain’s first world rally champion and securing Subaru’s first manufacturers’ crown. The following two years saw continued success, with Carlos Sainz, Kenneth Eriksson, and McRae all delivering key results to sustain Subaru’s dominance.
Clad in its iconic blue and gold livery, the Impreza became instantly recognisable. Its success sparked global demand for road-going WRX and STI variants, establishing Subaru’s reputation in the performance car world.
