The Peugeot 206 WRC dominated the early 2000s, winning three consecutive manufacturers’ championships and establishing Peugeot as a new force in world rallying. Built to World Rally Car regulations, the 206 was based on the production model’s compact shell but underwent extensive modification to meet the demands of top-level competition.
Under the bonnet sat a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing approximately 300 bhp, paired with a sophisticated four-wheel-drive system and a six-speed sequential gearbox. The rally version featured a widened track, reinforced bodyshell, and advanced suspension components, with electronically controlled differentials and finely tuned weight distribution. Shell preparation alone took up to seven weeks, reflecting the car’s complexity and the meticulous engineering involved.
The 2000 season marked Peugeot’s breakthrough, with Marcus Grönholm claiming both the drivers’ and manufacturers’ titles in the 206’s debut campaign. Further titles followed in 2001 and 2002, with Grönholm again winning the drivers’ crown in the latter year. His aggressive driving style was perfectly suited to the 206 WRC, and Peugeot capitalised on its momentum with a strong team and consistent development.
Clad in its striking Total livery, the 206 WRC became a defining car of its era. It proved fast, reliable, and adaptable across gravel, tarmac, and snow, and helped cement France’s reputation as a hub of motorsport engineering.
