The M-Sport Ford Fiesta WRC delivered one of the most remarkable underdog victories in World Rally Championship history by clinching the manufacturers’ title in 2017. Developed under new-for-2017 World Rally Car regulations, this British-engineered machine was based on the Fiesta production car’s modified shell and showcased how a privateer team could triumph over fully factory-backed operations through ingenuity, experience, and relentless determination.
Powered by Ford’s turbocharged 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine producing around 300 bhp, the Fiesta WRC combined M-Sport’s sophisticated four-wheel-drive system and sequential transmission with a thoroughly reinforced production body shell. Despite significantly smaller budgets compared to rival manufacturers, M-Sport’s engineers leveraged decades of rally experience and efficient resource management to produce a highly competitive package.
The 2017 season became a landmark year when Sébastien Ogier left Volkswagen to join M-Sport, bringing invaluable championship-winning expertise. Ogier secured his fifth consecutive drivers’ championship, while the team clinched the manufacturers’ crown. Alongside Ogier, team-mates Ott Tänak and Elfyn Evans contributed vital points, with Tänak scoring multiple podiums and underlining the Fiesta’s competitiveness.
