Car Info
The Citroën Xsara WRC delivered three straight manufacturers’ titles between 2003 and 2005, ushering in a new era of dominance for both Citroën and Sébastien Loeb. Built under World Rally Car regulations, the Xsara evolved from the road-going hatchback into a finely engineered contender capable of winning on any surface.
At its core was a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing around 310 bhp, mated to an X-Trac six-speed sequential gearbox and a sophisticated four-wheel-drive system with electronically controlled active differentials. Starting from the production monocoque, Citroën’s engineers created a lightweight yet rigid platform with aerodynamic efficiency, refined suspension geometry, and pinpoint handling - traits that became the car’s hallmark.
The Xsara WRC debuted with promise, and by 2003, it was a title-winning machine. Carlos Sainz played a key role in securing that year’s manufacturers’ crown, but from 2004 onwards, it became Sébastien Loeb’s car. The Frenchman’s exceptional precision and consistency were a perfect match for the Xsara’s performance envelope, leading to back-to-back drivers’ titles in 2004 and 2005. In total, Loeb scored 28 WRC wins in the Xsara - an extraordinary haul.
Its success laid the groundwork for Citroën’s continued run at the top, and marked the beginning of Loeb’s record-breaking career.
