FIA Junior World Rally Championship drivers will do battle in an all-new Ford Fiesta R2 in 2019.
Series organisers M-Sport unveiled the front-wheel-drive machine at its preparation facility in Krakow, Poland, yesterday evening.
Engineers have completely redesigned the car. The only element that has been carried over from the Fiesta that Emil Bergkvist guided to the 2018 Junior WRC title is the 999cc turbocharged engine – which has been boosted from 170 bhp to 200 bhp.
Parts developed for the car include a new Sadev five speed sequential gearbox as well as a new suspension including adjustable Reiger dampers and Eibach springs.
Maciej Woda, board member M-Sport Poland, is confident the new car will continue to provide a strong platform for developing future rally stars in 2019 and beyond.
“Sharing information with the engineers and designers back in Cumbria, we’ve been inspired by the success of the championship-winning Ford Fiesta WRC and every component has been designed to make this new car as strong and as innovative as possible within the regulations,” Woda explained.
“But the main philosophy of the Fiesta R2 remains – giving the stars of the future the perfect platform with which to hone their skills and show what they can do in the early stages of their careers.”
While it will make its competitive debut in the Junior WRC at next year's Rally Sweden (14-17 February), the new Fiesta has already been put through a comprehensive testing programme in four countries.
