McErlean began his rallying career in 2014 with a Peugeot 107 and won both the British and Irish Junior 1000 championships just two years later.
He steered a Citroën C2 R2 Max on various national rounds in 2017 before switching to a Ford Fiesta R2T shortly after in the search of more reliability.
It wasn’t long before the youngster upgraded again, this time to a Peugeot 208 R2 which he used to claim victory in the 2019 BritishJunior Championship.
A move to a Hyundai i20 R5 followed and McErlean contested several European Rally Championship rounds as well as making his WRC debut at ACI Rally Monza in 2020.
His pace was rewarded with four more WRC3 outings the year after and he relished the opportunity. Consistent top five finishes in Portugal and Belgium were followed by third in Spain and he stepped up to Hyundai’s new i20 N Rally2 car for the season finale at Monza.
Continued support from the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy helped McErlean piece together a full WRC2 campaign for 2022. He drives a Hyundai i20 N Rally2 with fellow Irishman James Fulton calling the pace notes.
