Jari Huttunen

Biography

After starting his career in 2013, Jari Huttunen spent his early years developing his driving in his native Finland.

Two years later he became Finnish champion in the SM3 class and was named Rally Star of the Future by his country’s motorsport authority, making his WRC debut in the junior category at his home round.

In 2016 Huttunen won Germany’s Opel Adam Cup with six wins from seven rounds. His performances earned a move up to the European Championship for 2017, in which he campaigned an R2-specification Opel and finished second in the Junior U27 series.

He also sampled four-wheel drive R5 competition for the first time, winning WRC2 at his home event in Finland in a Skoda Fabia R5.

Huttunen was chosen to spearhead Hyundai Motorsport’s driver development programme in 2018 and netted four top six finishes in an i20 R5. The following year was one of stagnation though, and he stepped back to WRC3 in 2020 with the Kowax 2BRally Team.

It was an inspired move. A revigorated Huttunen won two rounds on the way to securing the world title at the final fixture in Italy. He also found time in a busy season to win the Polish Championship.

Huttunen’s reward was a WRC2 programme with Hyundai Motorsport N alongside co-driver Mikko Lukka.

Huttunen joined the British M-Sport Ford WRT from Hyundai Motorsport in November 2021. Three podiums, including one victory, in four WRC2 appearances since then have been rewarded with a top-flight tilt on home ground for the flying Finn.Huttunen steps up to the FIA World Rally Championship’s top-level for the first time at Secto Rally Finland.
