Martin’s career started on home ground, serving a solid apprenticeship in the British rally scene between 2001 and 2003, before stepping up a level in 2004 when he teamed-up with the then 17-year-old Matthew Wilson and the Eddie Stobart Motorsport team.
2005 began in disastrous fashion as Martin and Wilson were involved in an almost career ending accident on the opening round of the BRC, Rally of Wales. But after an incredible recovery he took a landmark win on the Trackrod Rally with Wilson only months later.
In 2006 Martin moved to the international stage with Scottish driver Barry Clark as they took on the Fiesta SportingTrophy international series (FSTi) in its inaugural year and finished third.
His successful venture continued into 2007 as the pair won the opening five rounds of the FSTi to clinch the series with two events remaining.
In 2008 Martin linked up again with Wilson and the pair competed at the Stobart M-Sport Ford Rally Team until Wilson called time on his full-time driving career at the end of 2011.
A year co-driving Khalid Al-Qassimi at the Abu Dhabi Citroën Total WRT followed in 2013, before he joined forces with former SWRC title winner Craig Breen for a Peugeot-backed campaign in 2014 that netted third place in the European Championship.
An expanded programme in 2015 also included a WRC 2 season in the 208 T16 car, but they enjoyed more success in the European Championship, taking three wins on the way to the runner-up spot.
Martin returned to the premier category in 2016 with a number of appearances alongside Breen in a DS 3 World Rally Car with the Abu Dhabi Total World Rally Team. The pair impressed, and a stunning podium in Finland helped secure a works Citroën contract for the French manufacturer’s return to the WRC in 2017.
Six fifth place finishes from 11 rounds meant Martin and Breen stayed with Citroën’s frontline squad in 2018. But when the Irishman lost his drive with the French squad, Martin joined Elfyn Evans at M-Sport Ford for 2019.
