Sean Johnston’s route into the WRC was far from traditional.

His passion for motorsport was ignited when, as a seven-year-old, he watched his hero, Alex Zanardi, celebrate victory with a series of donuts while spectating at his first professional race.

But Johnston got his big break playing video games. In 2011 he competed in the North American Nissan GT Academy, a competition that took the fastest gamers in the United States and put them in real cars. Johnston finished second and even more determined to realise his dream of racing.

The following year that dream came to fruition and he enjoyed a remarkable debut in sports car racing. He won the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge, claiming 14 podiums from 15 races.

He moved to Europe to race in the Porsche Carrera Cup in Germany in 2013 but took a break from motorsports following the death of closest friend and team-mate Sean Edwards.

After moving to a Zen Centre for a year, Johnston returned to Germany and a spectating trip to Rallye Deutschland in 2018 switched his focus to a fast-track rise up rallying’s ranks.

An initial season in Germany’s Opel Rallye Cup led to a Junior WRC campaign in 2019, in which he finished fourth, and a WRC3 season in a Citroën C3 in 2020.

In 2021 Johnston and co-driver Alex Kihurani drive a C3 for the Saintéloc Junior Team in WRC2.
